Ministry Update & Serbia Outreach

Hello friends,

A ministry update is long overdue. I would like to share a brief summary of the past few months, as well as what is to come this summer.

Summary of 2025 so far…

Putting my German to good practice instructing kids at Easter Camp!
  • In February I participated in a 3 week intensive German course in Freiburg, Germany. God truly blessed this month, and it was a needed rest from the busy ministry at Tauernhof. I throughly enjoyed studying again, albeit for a brief few weeks. While I left more confident in my Hochdeutsch (regular German), I’m not sure how much this improves my understanding of the local dialect in Austria.
  • The remainder of the winter season (January-April) was a combination of various media projects in the office, running our tech for evening programs and occasionally, ski instructing. We ended the winter with family programs, which are always a personal highlight! I got to lead a group of 11 kids ages 3-8. This truly reminded me how much I love working with kids, and was a great opportunity to put my German skills to practice.
  • April-May has been a sweet yet short season. In summary, I ran a booth at a youth conference and published most of our promotional materials for our 2026 programs. Among other highlights were hosting family group and prepping for outreach in June. May ended with a 2-week break visiting my family in the states — praise God for this restful time to recharge before the busy summer season!

In Other Updates…

My family group from Spring Bible School
  • My church community has truly been a blessing! Since moving here, I’ve joined a young adult Hauskreis (small group). Through this weekly Bible study I’ve been able to get connected with some amazing local friends. And painstakingly practice the dialect of course 🙂
  • From August -September, I will be instructing several outdoor programs in German. Please pray for patience and stamina, as leading outside of my native language takes more mental energy.

Serbia Outreach

The SERBIA Missions Team!

From June 21 – July 5, I will be accompanying a group of 8 students on a 2-week outreach trip to Serbia. We will be connecting with the local church in Prokuplje in the south of Serbia, where we will work with Roma youth in the town and surrounding settlements. Primarily, the outreach will consist of leading kids programs, teaching English lessons and visiting locals in their homes. Please keep myself & the team in your prayers (see below for detailed prayer requests).

Prayer

The Tauernhof Full-Time Team
  • Please be praying for me personally. The Serbia outreach will be out of my comfort zone — specifically encountering a new culture I’m completely unfamiliar with, not to mention driving a van of students through narrow Balkan roads. Pray for confidence and renewed energy for myself throughout the trip.
  • Please be praying for each of our 8 students, that God would open their hearts to the culture there and we would be open to God working in unexpected ways. Pray also for wisdom and leadership for Heinz & Ute, who are leading the trip.
  • Pray for those we will be reaching in Serbia, specifically the Roma communities. Ultimately pray that these people would encounter Jesus in a personal way!

If you would like to support my ministry at torchbearers personally, you can donate here.

As always, your prayer and support is wholeheartedly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this update!

Life Update

It’s time for another life update! As many of you know, I have recently started a full time ministry role with Tauernhof Austria.

This role is multifaceted: I will be contributing toward Tauernhof’s media needs. This includes running their website, social media and marketing efforts. The goal is to spread the word about our Bible School and outdoor programs so that more people can experience God’s work in their lives here at Tauernhof! At the same time, I have the opportunity to be deeply involved in student discipleship — being present in the daily lives of the students, hosting a home group, leading sports activities and meeting 1:1 with students.

What is Tauernhof?

Bird’s eye view of our campus

Many have expressed curiosity as to what exactly I’m doing in Austria and “what” Tauernhof is.

Tauernhof Bible School is part of a wider organization called Torchbearers International.

Torchbearers’ mission is to proclaim the transforming presence of Jesus Christ through biblical teaching and practical training, equipping men and women for service in His church worldwide.

While many mission organizations focus solely on training and send missionaries “out” into the field, Torchbearers’ goal is rather discipleship minded: to equip young people with practical and personal training — that they may return and continue God’s work in their home churches.

During my past 3 years of involvement with ministries at Torchbearers, I’ve experienced God work in mighty ways. I’m looking forward to serving through their ministry and seeing how God continues to work through His people here!

As a center, Tauernhof hosts both international bible schools as well as German-speaking camps in the winter and summer. The center is located in Schladming, about 1 hr south of Salzburg.

Media as an Outreach

It has always been a deep desire of mine to use my vocational skills in a ministry setting.

I am excited to be given the opportunity to use my training in graphic design and marketing to further the work of Christ in the lives of current (and future) students at Tauernhof.

Students during work day. Taking photos and engaging with students is one of my favorite parts of my role here!

My media role looks like:

  • Running Tauernhof’s social media accounts — I am privileged to capture the first hand the real, raw work God is doing here in the lives of the students! Part of this includes promoting our programs so that Tauernhof can continue to run at full capacity —  having full programs gives Tauernhof the opportunity to impact more students and guests each year and use our facilities to the fullest. The main goal is that we can share about our center in a way that brings God the glory and allows others to experience His work here at Tauernhof.
  • Website: In addition to regular website updates, a big project for 2025 will be creating a new website for our center! The goal is that our guests and students can more easily access info about our center and programs.
  • In the winter, I will also run the tech and uploading recordings from our weekly evening lectures.
  • Lastly, I am responsible for coordinating other visual/media projects at tauernhof: program brochures, Bible School phamplets, student photos, newsletters, ect.

Student Discipleship

Ministry often involves wearing many “hats”. While my main role is media-related, I also have the opportunity to be involved in student life here at Tauernhof.

This looks like:

  • Hosting a weekly “Family Group” (student bible study) in my home
  • Coordinating and leading student sport days.
  • Being available for 1:1s with students for discipleship & mentorship.
  • Living daily life with the students — engaging during meal times, coffee breaks, ect.
  • Giving feedback and support for students’ assignments
  • Spending time with students during free time for hikes, recreation, ect.

Living Accommodations

Hosting some staff in my new Flat!

Since there is not much staff accommodation on campus, I’ve moved into a small flat in Schladming (the town where our Bible School is located).  I live about a 15 minute walk (or a breezy 5 minute bike) from Tauernhof.

This has turned out to be quite a blessing — having my own place allows me for the occasional retreat from a busy campus (currently buzzing with 93 students). My flat also allows me to build a healthy rhythm of sabbath rest amid my busy schedule, as well as provides a place to host family group, students, local church friends and staff throughout each month.

Raising Support

Being part of this ministry long-term means that I will have recurring expenses. These include:

  • Rent
  • Utilities (electricity, water, rubbish & snow removal in winter)
  • Daily living expenses (groceries, basic household items, ect)
  • Hospitality (that I can have the means to bless staff and students by hosting them in my home)
  • Visa fees (+ all those other fun government fees that come with being an expat in a new country)
  • Travel expenses (airfare back home for longer breaks to visit my family & supporters)

For visa reasons, I am asking that all donations be made out to Torchbearers International (in my name). These donations will in turn help Tauernhof contribute toward my salary, that my recurring living expenses can be provided for.

To support my ministry at Tauernhof, you can give through this link: https://torchbearers.org/team/hannah-young/

If you have any questions about the donation process, do not hesitate to ask. Torchbearers is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible*

Prayer Requests

  • Praise: My resident permit for Austria was approved! This means I am legally allowed to live and work in Austria for the next 24 months. Having my residence card brings tremendous peace of mind as the visa process here is quite demanding.
  • Prayer: Please pray as I continue my journey of figuring out all the bureaucratic stuff that comes with moving to a new country: getting my insurance card, drivers license, ect.
  • Prayer: For our student body. As we enter week 5 of Bible school, pray that the students would be drawn closer to the Lord and grow in a deep personal relationship with Him.
  • Pray for me personally as I settle into living in a new place, a new home, new community and a new language. Pray that I can keep my eyes set on God first each day. I praise God daily for the blessing of being here, but nonetheless it is a big adjustment.

If you wish to send mail, my new address is: Untere Klaus 19/5 8970 Schladming, Austria

Many thanks for your endless prayers and support!

In His Name,

Hannah

Stones in the Wilderness

In the golden beauty of the arid desert, God speaks.

Sunrise at Masada, Israel

[May 8, 2024] The gentle wind whispered through the brush, and the subtle cool of the evening was beginning to settle as the sun set over the Jordanian hills. Camels dotted the landscape in the distance as the last orange glow of light cascaded over the sandy earth. Here, in the stillness of the desert I was suddenly overwhelmed by the astonishing power of God’s presence. This prayer walk was different. I was standing in the very dessert where David wrote his Psalms.

In a land with a long history of unrest, currently in the midst of war — the desert is quiet, peaceful. As if not much has changed in the last 3000 + years since David penned his songs of praise.

I had a new understanding of Psalm 63 where David describes: “A dry and parched land where there is no water”.

Psalm 63:1
You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.”

If you have the time, I highly recommend listening to this version of Psalm 63 put to music. God used this Psalm to speak to me on that walk.

A Parched and Weary Land

On even the shortest of walks during my trip to Israel, my body easily grew weary under the heat of the direct sun. So much so that I got heat exhaustion just from being out for an hour after our early sunrise hike.

In the desert, even the slightest speckle of green on the landscape indicates one thing: WATER. A spring feeds the sparse vegetation around it, and even the tiniest lick of water produces a small oasis. This green had been visible when I stood in the desert the day prior and looked toward Ein Gedi (the spring where David presumably wrote this Psalm).

To think that my longing for my God should be like that parched feeling of thirst. To long for Him so desperately above anything else. To seek out a splash of green in a desert land.

If my body craves water after only a short hour, how much more should I crave God in every moment? It was as if for the first time I clearly understood the symbolism behind David’s metaphor in Psalm 63.

Desert walks, camels and quality time with friends!

Memorial Stones

From my view overlooking the vast desert, a distinct outline stood out on the ground below.  It was a long line of stones, spanning across the hill. My friend had earlier told a story about this “stone man”:

A devout woman in their town used to walk in the desert almost daily to pray. Whenever a prayer was answered, she placed another stone on her “stone man”, as a way to signify God’s faithfulness. Over the years, the stone monument grew and the “arms” of the stone man now stretch nearly 400 meters long.

I love the symbolism of the stone man. In the Old Testament, stones were often used as monuments to signify God’s faithfulness. After the Israelites crossed the Jordan (not too far from the desert where I stood), they erected stones as a symbol of God’s faithfulness to the 12 tribes of Israel.

See Joshua 4:21-24: And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

That their children and all peoples would KNOW of God’s faithfulness toward Israel. This made me think: how am I commemorating God’s faithfulness in my own life? Do I give the credit to God when things go well with me? I love the idea of using stones to represent significant moments where I’ve seen God’s work in my life. This gave me the idea to create my own version of the stone man — a way to physically represent answered prayers. I plan to start doing this tangibly with stones on my own prayer walks!

Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness One Year Later

Our final caving trip with the ABS program in New Zealand last year

Faithful. It’s a word that often comes to mind when reflecting back on Gods work in my life.

One “stone” I’ve been reflecting on recently is God faithfulness during my year in New Zealand.

This week, it’s been one year since I left New Zealand. God worked so intently in my desperate heart that year. He brought me closer to himself in a way I never would have imagined. In a personal, intimate way.

In that year, He showed me that the Christian life is not about religion. Far from it. It’s about living with God: my Lord and Savior Jesus himself.

I have my doubts and struggles. I fall short daily. But God. The One who knew no sin freely gave His Son to redeem me, a sinner. In his RICH mercy he has given himself— wholly and fully to me out of GREAT love. That we might have access to life together with Christ! Only by His grace.

Visually commemorating God’s faithfulness: writing Eph 2:4 on the beach!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved [Ephesians 2:4-5]

With steadfast confidence I can say that God did a refining work in me that year. I am continually grateful for his faithfulness and for the ways he has so intentionally humbled me (and continues to do so).

Some Little Life Updates…

While I am on the topic of God’s faithfulness and blessings, I wanted to share a few life updates from this spring!

Visiting the Temple Mount in Jerusalem

As previously mentioned, I visited friends in Israel last month. God blessed this trip immensely. It was an honor to be able to be there to support my friend for one of the biggest moments of his life! Some highlights were the Dead Sea, hiking Masada at sunrise and visiting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Above all, it was a joy to spend quality time with my friend & his family and make many new friends as well. To top it off, attending a Messianic-Jewish wedding in Jerusalem was a 10/10 experience. I might already be planning my next trip back… 🙂

At the wedding in Jerusalem with Odaya (my Israeli friends’s little sister)

At the end of May, I hosted a very large bridal shower for my sister, which turned out so lovely. This marked the first event in the oncoming wedding craziness with two siblings getting married this summer.

I’ve continued nannying for the same family who have 3-year-old & 17-mo-old boys. The sunnier weather has meant more trips to the zoo, playgrounds and a week-long trip to Victoria, CA earlier this spring.

Among other events this spring I’ve filled my days with quality time with friends, climbing outdoors, and hanging out with family (who are now all officially home of the summer!)

Nanny Life!

Praise/Prayer

  • Visa Update! Praise God for his hand in the visa process. I’ve officially mailed off my last document to get authenticated, gotten my passport photos, and am assembling final details for my (very thick) application folder. To top it off, I have a very official looking document with fingerprints proving I am indeed not a criminal (whew!) My visa appointment is scheduled for July 16. Continued prayers would be appreciated!

  • Please pray for my family as both Elise & Danny (sister and her fiancee) and Andrew & Sage (brother and his fiancee) are getting married this summer. Being home this summer is a gift that I want to savor. Pray for a fruitful season & quality time with family despite the business of planning two weddings in our household!

  • Pray for closure as I prepare to move at the end of the summer, and that God’s hand would be in all the tiny details that come with making a bigger, more permanent move. Also pray for my mom as she prepares for 4 of us kids to move out within the span of a month. (If you are confused about why/where I am moving, please go back and read my last post 🙂

  • Continue to pray for the peace of Israel. Praise: my friend (Yotam) was released from the military in time for his wedding, and that myself along with other guests from abroad were able to travel to Israel safely! God’s hand was really in this. Pray: Continue to pray for the hostages to return home, for those who have been displaced from their homes, and for everyone whose lives have been altered by the impact of the war.

Thank you all for your continued prayers. Be blessed.

In His Grace,

Hannah

Ministry Announcement

Hello friends,

It’s time to share a bit about what’s next regarding life & ministry. Things have been in the works for a bit and I am thrilled to be able to share about the doors God has opened!

In order to reach an open door one often needs to traverse through a long hallway. Before I share about the specific door God has opened, I’d like to share just that: what transpired in the hallway.

Trail run at my favorite alpine lake back home in Washington

The Hallway

While leaving my position in New Zealand was tough, the decision was easy.

Sometimes God just gives an unexplainable peace about a decision. The best way I can describe it was a temporal calling. God had put me in that exact position in that season for a reason. His sovereign purposes are always good, and He knew exactly what he was doing putting me there when he did!

Even though my role as Domestic Manager was not necessarily one I felt gifted in, the Lord was faithful and taught me so much in both the joys and the struggles of that season. However, there came a time to go.

Like Ruth said to Naomi: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” – Ruth 1:16 Despite uncertainty, Ruth faithfully followed Naomi and submitted to God’s will.

God was clearly calling me on to something else, even if unknown.

During the short summer months at Tauernhof, I realized that upon going home I would enter a season of “in-between.”  I became fearful of returning home, knowing the transition would be difficult after two years abroad. I was worried about reverse culture shock, feeling isolated after community living and just worried about returning to the mundane nature of daily life.

A quote that was shared with during that season stuck with me. A friend had seen this quote, framed on a sign in a hallway. It displayed a simple message:

“I’ll praise you in the Hallway”.

This picture of a hallway has really stuck with me. Those who know me personally know that at times I can be a chronic overthinker. I want to make the right decision! With every decision, I repeatedly ask myself questions like:

“What door should I knock on?”

“Should I wait for God to open the door?”

Discerning which door or “path” to take can be a difficult process.

Yet sometimes, it isn’t up to me to ask these questions when God is ultimately the one in control. Sometimes, the calling is to simply praise him in the hallway! To find joy in the waiting.

For me, this looked like going home not being 100% sure what was next. It meant remaining in the beautiful chaos of the in-between.

The Crack

I was standing in a dim hallway. Only a small crack, a shaft of light leaked through the bottom of a distant door.

Upon arriving home, I knew I wanted to continue in discipleship ministry. However, I didn’t know what this would look like. Was it full-time, vocational ministry? The mission field? Or maybe simply getting plugged back in with the local church?

My hostel in Tokyo after leaving Caprenwray NZ. Little did I know what God had in store next!

A “crack” in a closed door had appeared. An opportunity to serve in vocational ministry. But the pieces didn’t quite fit together.

I approached the situation prayerfully, and came away with the conclusion that I didn’t want to force God’s will.  There were several aspects of this opportunity I would have to step back and trust God to sovereignly work out.

As hard as it was, I knew I had to approach this season with an attitude of surrender. I started my job back home as a nanny – which I have been LOVING! I got plugged in with small group from my church and remained in the hallway.  There were many moments when I doubted God’s plan and struggled not knowing what I should do next. I started reading my Bible cover to cover. I’ve actually spent more time in the word during this season than any season over the past 2 years!

Just a reminder that God is continually faithful, and he sees us even when we don’t see his purposes!

This path in Kyoto, Japan reminded me of how I envision the “hallway season”.

Double Doors Swing Wide

Then, suddenly the crack disappeared and double doors swung open, flooding the corridor with light.

It was as if God was waiting patiently to reveal this opportunity in a crystal clear moment, all the while refining me in the in-between.

God presented me with the opportunity to serve in full full-time vocational ministry! Not only that, this was a position that combines two areas I’m passionate about.

The first being discipleship ministry. The second being my field of study: my actual vocation. This is something I’ve always dreamed about: using digital marketing/design within a ministry context.

Every small detail God presented me with fit together. I realized that saying “no” to such an opportunity would be slamming a door God has so clearly orchestrated.

At the end of the day, we have the choice wether or not to enter a door God has opened. But ultimately, he is the one who orchestrates it. He will open and close doors in my life as he sees fit.

So, I’m thrilled to announce that Lord willing, I will be pursuing a full-time ministry role within Torchbearers International.

The role will be multifaceted: It will be a marketing role, running the external and internal visual media for the Bible School center. It will also be a discipleship role. I have the opportunity to join the Bible School team and invest in the daily lives of the students.

Should the Lord see fit to keep the door open, I will be moving to Schladming, Austria in September 2024. I will be serving in a long term role at Tauernhof – where I first did Bible School as a student nearly three years ago. God is so crazy faithful and I can’t even describe it. So ready to see what he has in store!

Serving on staff at Tauernhof in 2022

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for my resident card application. Since I am not an EU citizen, this makes working and living in Austria a bit complicated. I am applying for permanent residency, which I will need in order to legally stay in Austria long term. I’m grateful for the support Tauernhof has provided in assisting me with this process!
  • Pray that I can continue to remain present in my daily ministry here at home. That I would remain joyful in my daily life and pursue opportunities to serve others here at home while I remain somewhat in the ‘hallway season’.
Alpine wildflowers – photo taken on tour July 2023. Trusting God in the details – no matter how intricate!
  • Finances. God has been so beyond faithful thus far, and I am continuing to trust Him to provide in the future. Since this is a ministry role, I will be raising some support. If you have it on your heart to donate, or just want to learn more about the mission of Torchbearers International, please reach out to me! I am in the process of setting up an online donation link through Torchbearers.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Joyfully in Christ,

Hannah

Admitting our Need for Christ…

“Gipfelkreuz”, translated literally to “Summit Cross”. Crosses are set up as monuments at the top of each summit in Austria.
I love this continual reminder to look to Christ!

Personally, my biggest takeaway during Summer 2023 was that to lead well, it often means being willing to ask for help. The same goes for my relationship with Jesus and admitting my need for Him.

I’ll share a personal example of what I mean…

It was halfway though a long tour, one of the most physically exhausting hikes of the program. Before the trip started, I had gone to extreme measures to make sure my team was prepared for the trip:

Was each team member physically healthy?

Does each member have the required gear?

Most importantly, does everyone have rated sleeping bags and layers for cold temperatures?

In my extensive checking to make sure others were prepared, I had forgotten a few of my own essential items.

One of these items was my hiking poles.

Physically, I struggled on the second day. Because I had neglected to pack what I needed, I was unable to give my team members my full attention. I knew that if I had packed my poles I wouldn’t be struggling now. But inwardly, I was too stubborn to ask my team for help.

We had an instructor meeting that night, and one of the leaders shared the importance of taking care of yourself in order to better serve others. His words really struck me. Though I knew it would show weakness, I asked one of the instructors if I could borrow their poles.

Small mountain chapel outside our hut where my team did our daily debrief and prayer.

Because of the kindness of my fellow instructor — I was able to power through the rest of the trip with the poles. The peace of mind knowing I myself was taken care of allowed me to be there for other members of my team when they needed help.

This is like our relationship with Christ.

Rather than relying on our own strength to power through, we should ask for help. We should continually ADMIT our need for him.

During my Bible reading this week as I’m writing this (in February 2024), I happened to land in John 15. Coincidentally, one of my favorite passages.

In verse 5, Jesus says: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

When we don’t express our need for him — we are claiming that we can do it by our own strength, apart from Christ. In reality, apart from him we can do NOTHING. A bountiful harvest is only possible because of the vine that nurtures the fruit. A fruit will not continue to grow after being plucked off the tree.

To be a good leader for my team, I needed to start at the source. If I had never approached anyone with my need for hiking poles, I wouldn’t have gotten very far.

If we never admit our sinfulness, our failures and struggles to Jesus then we are striving to live outside of his nurturing care.

Hiking to the Glacier

But, if I admit my need for Christ, the entire perspective changes. I am no longer living for myself, outside of Christ. I am living in Christ! I am not living for my own will, but Christ’s. This “oneness” is described beautifully by Jesus in John 17:23.

“The glory that you[the Father] have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,  I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”

Admitting our need for Him starts at the moment of salvation — admitting our sin and need for a Savior. However, truly abiding in Him, and Him in us means continually admitting our need. This is not an act, but a mindset.

It is a continual laying my needs before the cross of Christ. It is a constant reliance on His strength. It is finding unconditional joy in the person of Jesus.

He who is God himself.

One of my favorite Gipfelkreuze.

Summer 2023: Serving in Austria

Students during a Bible Lecture. The classroom looks different in the alps!

Hey friends. It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on here. That being said, there is a lot to catch up on! This past summer, I had the opportunity to go back to Austria to serve for 3 months. In this post, I would love to share a bit about how God worked during this time.

Instructor Training

Upon my arrival in June, we had a week of training for the instructors. During this week I had 5 days of training in a small group of around ten instructors. This included training for leadership & spiritual mentorship, as well as first aid & leading outdoor activities. I was also blessed to visit my good friend Abby upon my initial arrival in Germany, as well as a couple other friends in Munich (Mo and Vannie). Reuniting with friends who point me to Christ truly fills my heart!

International Conference

During the week between instructor training and Upward Bound, Tauernhof hosted the Torchbearers International delegates conference.

I was blessed with a couple days to rest this week and I also got the opportunity to serve as well! I volunteered setting tables, helping in the kitchen, worship, making slides and driving shuttles. Transitioning back to the right side of the road with a manual was a bit of a learning curve at first 🙂

Reunited with Werner & Heidi!

I was reunited with Werner & Heidi (the directors from New Zealand) —  this was a collision of worlds from opposite hemispheres and truly a delight.

Upward Bound

At an Alpine Hut on one of our tours. Spot my brother in the upper right 🙂

The program I helped lead is called Upward Bound.

Basically, it is a 5-week outdoor Bible School and Christian Leadership program. Unlike a traditional classroom setting, students learn though ABL: adventure based learning. The program includes team challenges and leadership activities in addition to daily solid Bible teaching and time outdoors in God’s creation.

The goal of this program is to develop the whole person in Christ — physically, mentally, and spiritually. This motto of “Body, Soul, Spirit” is based off of 1 Thessalonians 5:23, in which Paul prays:

“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

As believers we pursue the UPWARD call of sanctification. Our growth in Jesus is an upward climb, as we seek to know Him more and grow in truth. We are Upward Bound to Christ.

We are called to steward our bodies (Romans 12:1-2l; 1 Cor 10:31), saturate our mind and soul with truth (Col 3:2, 2 Tim 2:15) and grow spiritually in our personal relationship with Him.

Evening Worship Outdoors

Returning to the program as an instructor this year was a tremendous honor and a new undertaking for me.

God put it on my heart to come back to this program and serve. It brought me so much joy to lead in this role after being led so well when I came as a student. Shout out to my incredible instructor from last year, Yotam — you are an awesome mentor, friend and continual encouragement and source of much wisdom 🙂  If it were not for Yotam’s faithful leadership, I don’t know if I would have taken the courageous step to come back and lead.

Throughout my life, having had leaders that point me to Jesus directs me to point others to Christ! Just all the more evidence that it is God himself working in us.

Looking to Christ above all, and pointing others to Him was my goal in Upward Bound. Looking back I can say that while I encountered challenges and was continually humbled in many ways, God blessed this ministry immensely. It was a much needed encouragement after a good (but very exhausting) season in New Zealand.

Though I may have had a lack of physical rest *specifically sleep — the Lord truly filled my cup each day at Upward Bound.

My team, “The Soul Surfers” [a team name creatively invented by the students]

I was blessed by a phenomenal team of students.  Soul Surfers, you were an absolute light and encouragement to me this summer. I am so proud of each one of you – each of you helped lead our team exceptionally well. You brought values of honesty, humor, and maybe a little too much competition to our team 😉 As your instructor I was deeply encouraged in return 100x fold!  Faith, Finn, Lukas, Wilissa, Mary, Nathan, and Kate. Thanks for the way you impacted my life this year. You guys rock!

Personally, my biggest takeaway during this season was learning that to lead well often means being willing to ask for help. The same thing goes for my relationship with Jesus and admitting my need for Him. I’ll talk more about this in a later post.

Serving in the Bistro

Serving in the Bistro and Kitchen

I spent my last weeks of summer serving in the Bistro. It was nice to have a mental break from the job of instructing. It was the first time I had truly slowed my pace down since Christmas break – and the time to reflect on the last months was much needed.

Working in the house & kitchen also gave me a greater appreciation for the diligent work the house and kitchen staff do! Being it was my first time in this role, I had a lot to learn. My main job was running the bistro for guests. This included lots of cleaning, restocking items, serving drinks and lots of practice speaking German.

The summer ended with a joyful reunion with Bible School friends in Germany and Switzerland, berry picking, a couple long tours, painting sessions and camping outdoors with friends. It was a fresh breath to take in the beauty of creation and spend quality time with the people God has so immensely blessed me with!

What’s Next?

On September 9th, 2023 I left Austria. With overwhelming peace, gratitude and a small amount of uncertainty, I returned home to the United States for my first long-term stay in 2 years. Little did I know what God had in store.

“What’s Next” is a question I’ve been asked continually in the months back home. While my heart would love nothing more than to go serve in full time ministry tomorrow, God is teaching me contentment and continual joy in him during this season of “in between”.

In the last months I have been living back home with family, attending my home church and nannying for two sweet little boys here in Washington. This has been a sweet season and I am enjoying the moments and lessons God is teaching me in this slower pace of life.

If you’ve made it to this point in this post, stay tuned for future updates. God has big things in store next – including a big ministry/life update which I will be sharing soon!

God’s Place, God’s People.

At Capernwray we talk a lot about encountering the reality of God.

Living among international students here at Capernwray has shown me more of God himself though this place and through these people. But most importantly, I have realized that this ministry is not the place or people themselves. Yet it is Christ, working though this place, working through these people. It is God himself we have the opportunity to worship, serve, and grow in unity together with  — that very person and God himself is Jesus Christ. I am grateful for the challenges here that have grown me severely. I am thankful for the opportunities wherein God has ministered though me into the lives of others, and to be encouraged in return —that is the reflection of only God himself.

As my final weeks here approach, I wanted to share a powerful reminder a friend told me:  “The same God of Capernwray is still God wherever I go.”

I know God has great things in store next. Big things, and small. Some known, mostly unknown. Both are equally terrifying and require a great deal of faith. Praise Jesus I have a very REAL GOD who does not measure the amount of my faith. And it is this very God himself who is working within me.

Ministry Week

Hello Dear Friends.

It’s been a while since I’ve done an update on here and a lot has happened in the past months!

I plan to catch up on updates in the form of several posts over the next couple weeks. I’ll start with what I’ve been up to most recently, then work backwards from there.

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to lead a group of students on a ministry trip to a local church!

Ministry week is a regular occurrence here at Capernwary. For one week a semester, groups are assigned to local churches throughout the North Island. It is an opportunity for students to live out what they have been learning at the Bible School, participate in outreach and serve the local community.

Myself, along with a group of 9 students were assigned to Te Awamutu Bible Chapel. Though the church was located only 15 minutes away from our campus, students were billeted in local homes. This allowed for the opportunity to get connected with people and experience the hospitality from local church members.

Throughout the week we worked closely with their church staff and participated in many of their weekly ministries and outreach projects. The week was “Chock-a-block” (or very full, as the Kiwis like to put it)! In addition to serving around the church, students had the opportunity to teach daily at a school, run an after-school park program for kids, and help with youth and children ministries. Yes, if there could be one word to sum up the week it would be: kids. Lots of kids.

Shout out to the church’s ministry coordinator (Carey), and our team’s student leader (Jonas) for your organization skills & leadership. Seriously. Without you the week quite likely would have been a disaster.

My role as the staff member on the team was overseeing the week as a whole, checking in with the student leaders, leading group debriefs, and lots of student drop-offs and pick-ups!  I also did a lot of checking in with the church leaders, school teachers, and parents of the kids.

A big part of it wasn’t necessarily leading but stepping back to let the students lead.  It was really cool to see them step into different roles and watch them use their gifts within ministry. All of the students were 100% committed and motivated, which made the full-on week quite manageable. Big shoutout to my TABC team! You guys rock.

Many connections were made, good conversations were had, and it was hard to say goodbye at the end of the week.

For me personally, the learning takeaway of the week is that leadership is hard. Shocker.

I’ve experienced many challenges in the past months. I’ve taken on new roles which have revealed ugly parts of myself and also grown me severly.

Finding a balance between being a leader and friend to students who are close to my age is hard. Learning to step back and let students lead, but still be present and contributing is hard.  Responsibility can be overwhelming. Finding support for myself is hard.

To those who took the time to check in on me during ministry week — thank you. Your encouragement truly means the world.

So proud of the whole team!

Overall I have been reminded time and time again of the importance of looking to Christ. It is his strength working within me that surpasses any striving motive of my own. As much as I want to focus on being a good leader, that is not the point. I’ve recognized serving God can easily become my priority above God himself.

My prayer is that I would not be working out of my own motives or strength — that only Christ would be working, and that his joy would become apparent to others through me. Please continue to be praying this prayer over me. That I would find my strength in Christ alone.

October/November Adventure Bible School Update

As I approach the two-month mark of my time in New Zealand, I am well overdue for an update. These past 6 weeks I’ve been involved in running our first Adventure Bible School (ABS).

Upon my arrival at Capernwray, I was promptly “chucked off the deep end” as my Kiwis mates would put it. Needless to say, working at ABS has been a challenging yet life-giving opportunity.

My role on the program involves leading morning exercises with the students, organizing gear & food, and assisting with ABL & outdoor activities. I am also involved in student mentorship: leading debriefs, small groups & student discipleship.

We have 15 students (ages 18-23) participating in the program. Most of the students are international — coming from North America, Germany, Austria as well as one local student from New Zealand.

It has been neat to watch the students grow close to each other in community as well as experience the growth in their faith through the lectures and small group discussions.

Outdoor activities and student trips have been exhausting but rewarding. Some of the highlights from this past month with the students included caving, kayaking, cycling, climbing and tramping (the Kiwi/Aussie word for hiking).

Prayer Requests

Please keep the students in your prayers as they finish the program. Pray for those who will be traveling home at the end of this week, as well as for the others staying on for the longer term Bible School. Pray that they would continue to seek Christ and be salt and light here in New Zealand and in their home communities!

Please keep the Capernwray leadership in your prayers as we search for new program staff. Pray for God’s providence in bringing the right people to these roles.

For me personally, pray that I would continue to adjust into this role — that God would direct my steps and that I would be motivated by his joy. Also pray for balance between work & rest.

Praise Report

I count myself blessed to have connected with an amazing local church with a thriving young adult group. I am beyond thankful for the body at Mardon Rd as well as hospitable people who have encouraged and basically adopted me into their NZ families. Big shoutout to the Bennetts & Schreibers for making me feel at home here during these first two months.

A final word to my international family in the States, Germany, Austria, and scattered throughout the world: Thank you all for your prayers and support. Postcards and mail can be sent to to the address below and I will happily write back!

Keep pressing on unto Christ!

Ministry and Life Update

Photo from Upward Bound at Tauernhof, July 2022. Markus Zorn Photography.

I am excited to announce that starting in October, I will be serving as program assistant for a Christian outdoor adventure program in New Zealand!

Over the past year in Austria, God has shown me a passion and gifting for this specific ministry. I truly find joy in encouraging others and teaching them through experiences in God’s beautiful creation. I have also come to realize that during these years of my life, I have the opportunity to serve in BIG ways in a context that practically I would not be able to serve in later in life.

Worship in the mountains during the adventure program in Austria.

The program is called Adventure Bible School (ABS) at Capernwray New Zealand and is part of Torchbearers International, the same organization I have been involved with in Austria. ABS is a 6-week intensive program designed to challenge the whole person; body, soul, and spirit, particularly in the area of Christian living. Altogether, will help lead 3 programs over the course of the next 8 months. The class size of 18 students makes for a unique, personal opportunity to encounter God in an international setting.

At the program, I will be instructing outdoor sports and leading adventure-based learning activities. More than an instructor, this is a discipleship role. I will be an RA and spiritual mentor to the students, living alongside them and investing in their lives.

Connecting climbing with our trust in Jesus; Upward Bound 2022

As this is a ministry role, I will be raising support. This money will be used to support me personally during the year of ministry. Specifically, the funds will be used to contribute toward the cost of travel expenses to and from NZ, health insurance, visa fees, groceries and personal needs.

The easiest way to give is electronically through Venmo: @Hannah-young-810. Alternately, checks can be given in person before September 20th, or mailed to my physical address in New Zealand: Capernwray Bible School, P.O. Box 702, Cambridge 3450. NEW ZEALAND.

If you are unable to contribute financially, your prayers are just as much appreciated! You can follow this blog for updates & prayer requests in the coming months.
